Quick and Easy Bathroom Updates Print E-mail

First of all I wanted to apologize for slacking in my blog writing.  I had writers block - it is more difficult than I thought to come up with new and exciting topics that you will actually want to read about!

I have been working on a few projects in my apartment (which I unfortunately rent), and was amazed at how easy the actual install was.  If I had realized how easy these quick fixes were, I would have done them a year ago when I moved in!  So I thought I would share some of these quick and easy updatesfor your bathroom.

The first project of mine was storage.  My bathroom is circe 1980 and does not have very good storage.  The vanity has two doors and NO drawers, making it very difficult to organize all of my bathroom essentials.  The medicine cabinet old and rusty, the magnets on the doors don't work well anymore, and the cabinet is only 3" deep, which isn't deep enough for most storage.  So what to do?  I have a small dressing area right outside my bathroom with a full-length mirror, and that gave me an idea.  Robern just came out with a full length medicine cabinet available in 4", 6" and 8" img_3664.jpgdepths, and the 16" width was the same size as my mirror!  The hardest part of the project was taking off the mirror, which has been glued way too thoroughly, and came off in pieces no bigger than my hand.  I couldn't believe how easy the actual installation of the medicine cabinet was!  Apparently all you have to do is install a track along the bottom (the cabinet then rests on the track) and then screw in some bolts at the top of the cabinet!  That is it!  The installation process took all of 10 minutes.  Now remember, I installed this as a surface mount, so I did not cut into the wall.  That would have been a lot more work, as there is electrical wiring in the wall.  The best part?  I can easily remove it and take it with me when I move!

My next project was to replace the awful faucet in my bathroom.  The Hot/Cold insert had cracked and fallen out, so I could never tell what the temperature of the water was going to be when I turned on the faucet.  Not only is this dangerous img_3662.jpg(I could have scalded myself!), but it was also very annoying.  I had put of changing the faucet because I thought I would crack the countertop or cause a leak and didn't want to deal with that big of a project.  Boy was I mistaken!  The faucet unscrewed with a wrench in under a minute, and the faucet came off easily with a slight tug.   Now I was worried about how I was going to install the new faucet!  Lucky for me, Kohler's faucets are very simple to install.  All I had to do was take the faucet out of the box, place it on the countertop with the hoses and drain in the hole, and go under the sink to attach the flexible stainless steel supplies.  The installation took less than 10 minutes.

Another very easy update, which I do on a regular basis, is change out my showerhead.  All you need is a wrench and some plumbers tape.  Screw off the old shower head, wrap some of the plumbers tape around the threading of the shower arm, screw on the new head and enjoy your new showering experience!
