Remodeling On A Budget

Remodeling a bathroom can get pricey, but every home improvement magazine, website, article, etc. will tell you that it gives you the greatest ROI of any home improvement. They key is to know where you want to spend your money and which projects you can hold off on.

Last week, a young couple came into the showroom. They had just purchased their first home together and wanted to do a little upgrading to their bathrooms. They came in prepared using the Before You Visit checklist from our website and had a list of what they needed for each bathroom. They wanted to replace all of the faucets, sinks and toilets, but knew that in reality that part of the project would have to wait until they had a bigger budget to work with.
Below are some tips for remodeling on a budget:

  1. Prioritize your shopping list – You don’t have to get everything at once; making a few small changes could really change the look of your bathroom. For example, the abovementioned couple was cost conscious, so first we picked out what they needed most – lights and mirrors. To keep costs down, we stuck to chrome in most of the bathrooms, which is shiny silver and the least expensive finish.
  2. Splurge on one thing – If you fall in love with something, splurge! The couple above were set on using satin nickel in their master bath, which is one of the most popular finishes today, but also a bit more expensive than chrome. They had also fallen in love with a frosted glass and decided to hold off on replacing the toilet and sink so they could get this shower door.
  3. Mix and Match – Love the look of glass tile, but can’t afford to use it for an entire shower surround? Use a less expensive field tile and mix in glass tile as a border or on one wall.
  4. Think Green – While purchasing a water-conserving toilet may not save you money immediately, using 30% less water will certainly save you money in the long run.
  5. Work within your current floor plan – You can still make a huge impact without moving around plumbing and knocking down walls, which will make your budget skyrocket.
