Mosaic Motifs

Tired of beige, beige and more beige?  Want to add color to your kitchen backsplash, or decoration to your medicine cabinet?  Think mosaics, they aren’t just for your bathroom floor anymore!  They can spice up any area – a frame around a mirror, inside a niche on your wall, as a rug inlay in a tile floor, over your range in your kitchen, even around a urinal!

No matter what your design style, there are mosaics to suit your needs.  For those of you who tend to like the contemporary, try using a glass mosaic.  Glass tiles can be glossy, matte or iridescent and can have straight or uneven edges.  The glossy and iridescent tiles will reflect the light, brightening up the space and adding a great amount of interest.  The matte tiles will also add interest, but the interest really comes from the depth and color of the tiles.

Are you more of a traditional guy or gal?  Many of your favorite stones are available as mosaics.  In one of my recent projects I used a beautiful white carrara marble on the walls and a beautiful black marble on the floors.  To tie the black of the floor in with the rest of the room and to add more interest to the walls, I used a 5/8” x 5/8” mosaic of the black marble at chair rail height.

Mosaics also come in a myriad of shapes and sizes.  I have seen everything from the basic 1” x 1” square to random sized shattered glass, 1” x 2” bricks to penny rounds.  For the installer’s convenience, most mosaics come mesh mounted, which means they are glued on to a mesh backing to keep them together and in place.
